Ormeau Park CX

Published by admin on

XMTB were the host club this week for round 7 of the Ulster cyclocross league at Ormeau park in Belfast.  This venue has been used by the club for years and they sure know how to build a good course!  For the second year running they used the Ormeau rd end of the park changing it slightly for this year.  It had a good mix of terrain that really tested the riders – both physically and mentally. Muddy climbs and boards forced us off the bikes, deep ruts and off-cambers tested our concentration and slippy hair-pin turns tested out bike handling skills.

Faye and Amy entered the U6 and U8 race but both decided on the starting line that it was to cold to race!  In the U10’s was Elliot who rode a great race finishing in 8th.  His big brother Reuben rode well in the U12’s with Andrew not too far behind finishing 5th and 8th respectably.  Young Drew opted for the mtb this week for the U16s.  Not sure if it made any difference or not as the podium photo looked identical to previous weeks! Well done on the 2nd place.

Four riders represented the KCC in the 85 rider ‘B’ CX race.  We had Richard, Rod, Chris and Michael who all pushed themselves to the limit.  All rode really well and Richard finished well up the field in 14th.  Rod was also having a great race but unfortunately the mud took its toll ripping the rear mech off on lap 3 of the 5 lap race.  We have now put in a bulk order for Cannondale mech hangers which should see the season out!  Hopefully we won’t need them…….

After the massive field of ladies cx and mtb support races Scott and Ross joined the 60 ‘A’ riders for the 7 lap race.  Scott, who has had a run of bad luck, ended when a bird crapped on him before the race!  Well it seemed to have worked as he rode strong from the off leaving me (Ross) for dust.  He ended up in a fantastic 15th place.  I didn’t have too bad a day either riding a course that suited me well finishing in 31st.

Big thanks to XMTB and all the volunteers for running a great event and the soup and chilli were great afterwards.

Next week we are heading to “The Jungle” outdoor adventure park outside Moneymore.  Full results and details for next week here .
